Akiko is an unusual girl whose skin smells like old paper, has freckles and uses her heart on four wheels as a form of transport. She loves dictionaries and her father, dislikes boundaries, divisions and Mrs. Linda, talks to pawns and trees, knows letters but not numbers. Akiko, like many children today, is often lonely, which leads her to develop a rich sensory world and "creates" a close friend, Marcel, who, in the end, materializes through the power of love. Akiko shapes her world by choosing and rejecting words that define her, emphasizing the miraculous power of language.
